Your glasses are lying on a piece of paper. You go to pick them up and—wait a minute! What looks like a three-dimensional object is actually just a flat plane. Due to a careful manipulation of perspective and shadow, as well as some serious drawing chops, you’ve been fooled into thinking a pencil sketch is an object leaping out from the page!

Through use of perspective and, at times, cut paper to mimic an object’s edge, these artists achieve a 3D effect that makes it look like the subject is leaping off the paper and out towards the viewer. But each of the pencil drawings you see here are, in fact, completely two-dimensional.

This technique isn’t new; the effect of making an object look 3D on a 2D plane is known as trompe-l’œil, French for “deceive the eye,” and has been used by artists for centuries. Take a look at the collection below, which features the work of various artists, and see if you’re not fooled!
