The Zika virus continues to spread across the world, and medical researchers are understandably alarmed. There is strong evidence, increasing by the day, that the Zika virus is causing babies to be born with abnormally shrunken heads, called microcephaly. In the most horrific example to date, one baby was stillborn after the virus appeared to have <a href="http://www.iflscience.c Continue reading These Are The Areas Of The USA In Most Danger From The Zika Virus

Super thin and crazy strong, the extremely conductive graphene is arguably everyone’s favorite nanomaterial. Just last week, scientists generated electricity by dragging a drop of seawater across it. Now you can make the wonder material yourself in your own kitchen. All you need is a blender.

Is Global Warming Causing Marine Diseases To Spread?

Global climate change is altering the worlds oceans in many ways. Some impacts have received wide coverage, such as shrinking Arctic sea ice, rising sea levels and ocean warming. However, as the oceans warm, marine scientists are observing other forms of damage.

My research focuses on diseases in marine ecosystems. Humans, animals and plants are all susceptible to diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi. Marine diseases, however, are an emerging field. Continue reading Is Global Warming Causing Marine Diseases To Spread?

The criteria for life on other planets is the focus of the 4th Australian Exoplanet Workshop, hosted by the University of Southern Queensland this week. The first in this series on exoplanets looks at the story so far in the search for life elsewhere in the universe.

Ever since humans first looked up at the night sky, we have wondered whether we are alone in the universe. Dreams of li Continue reading Exo-Earths And The Search For Life Elsewhere: A Brief History

South America was the last habitable continent to be colonized by humans. Researchers have just discovered two distinct phases in the demographic history of South Americans: rapid spread with low population sizes, followed by sedentary lifestyles with exponential growth. The study, published in Nature this week, compared the population growth of prehistoric South Americans to that of invasive species.

The first Americans were descendants of Siberians that crossed the ancient land bri Continue reading Humans Colonizing South America Resembled Invasive Species
